The operational unlock is the release pattern: clinics decide when same-day slots open (7 a.m., midnight, rolling), how many per provider, and which appointment types are eligible. Demand meets supply without a single ring.

The three rules that make it safe

1. Triage-aware templates. High-acuity types stay controlled; routine same-day flows open. 2. Load-balancing. Bookings distribute across providers, rooms, and sites in real time, so no schedule floods. 3. All-patient access. If unattached patients or patients without a health card can't book, they phone — and the model breaks. Booking must be designed for everyone or the phone returns.

What it means for staff

Reception stops triaging calls and starts managing exceptions. No-shows drop with automatic SMS reminders. And because bookings write directly into the EMR schedule (Accuro, OSCAR, Meditech), there's no side calendar to reconcile at day's end.
